President of South Korea Yoon Suk-Yeol, voted to be impeached by the members of the parliament on December 14, 2024. This process was initiated after the President’s failed attempt to impose martial law.
The declaration of Martial Law for a short time by Yoon shocked the entire South Korea. The leaders of the opposition attempted to impeach him a week before, but he managed to survive this. This happened after the members of the ruling party boycotted the process.
With 2024 voted in favor of the motion. 85 voted against the motion and eight invalid votes were made out of 300 lawmakers. The announcement has been made by Speaker Woo Won Shik that the impeachment votes have been passed. After the announcement, he concluded the session.
The process of impeachment may take a week time, as the trial process has to be held in the constitutional court. If 6 out of the 9 members vote in favor of sustaining the impeachment, then only the President will get removed from his office.
South Korean President will lose all his power and duties after he is delivered with copies of impeachment. The copies will be delivered also to the Constitutional Court.
The Constitutional Court total has 180 days to find out whether to restore power of Yoon or dismiss him from the post of President.
If he gets removed from the office then a process for national election will be followed to choose the next leader within 60 days.
