Los Angeles police shot dead a Sikh man who was performing Gatka, a traditional martial art, in the middle of the road.
In a video released by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the 36-year-old man, identified as Gurpreet Singh, was seen wielding a machete near the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles. The weapon was later confirmed to be a “khanda”, a double-edged sword commonly used in Sikh martial arts.
The incident occurred on July 13 after several 911 calls alerted the LAPD about a man swinging a large blade at people near the busy intersection of Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard.
Officers said Singh abandoned his car in the middle of traffic and later shocked onlookers by attempting to slice his tongue.
As officers approached, Singh hurled a bottle at them and attempted to escape. He drove recklessly until he rammed into a police vehicle, coming to a halt near Figueroa and 12th Streets. Moments later, he rushed at the officers with the blade, prompting them to open fire.
