The United States officials believed that a team of Iranian scientists was swiftly developing nuclear weapons and secretly conducting the operation. The US officials gathered an intelligence report about Iran’s nuclear programme. American newspaper New York Times shared the reports, citing that the Biden administration had shared the information with the Trump administration a few days before Donald Trump’s coronation.
As per Intel reports, Iran is putting effort into converting its stored Uranium into nuclear weapons, not in a year but in a few months. However, The newspaper also mentioned that the American officials in their assessment are of the view that the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, did not decide on the development of nuclear weapons.
The assessment came after Iran’s influence has become weakened in the region. Israel has massively weakened Iran’s proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah, and Bashar-al-Assad’s fall in Syria has limited the Khamenei-led nation’s ability to carry weapons through the country.
In the New York Times report, it is also mentioned that a few US officials are of the view that the development of nuclear weapons may be a resistance strategy of Iran against possible attacks by Israel and the United States.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is present in the United States and he will be meeting US President Donald Trump. The two leaders may discuss the issue during the meeting.
