Why Sheikh Hasina’s Wedding Date Sparked Debate?
The case has created a lot of buzz on social media. Initially, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) had planned to announce its verdict on November 14, 2024. But just a day before, on November 13, the court changed the date to November 17, the very same day as Sheikh Hasina’s wedding anniversary. This sudden change has led many people to question whether the court picked this date on purpose.
Social Media Asked: A Coincidence or Planned?
People on social media in Bangladesh are divided. Some believe that it wasn’t just a coincidence and that the court intentionally chose this date to humiliate Sheikh Hasina. Some think it was just bad luck, while others believe it was a way to take political revenge.
Was This Part of a Political Strategy?
After the verdict, some online users blamed Mohammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, for having the date changed. They accused him of trying to make Sheikh Hasina suffer by giving her the death sentence on her wedding anniversary. Some people on social media even said, “November 17 became the day of Hasina’s wedding and her death sentence.”
Sheikh Hasina’s Response to the Court’s Verdict
Sheikh Hasina and her party, the Awami League, have called the entire trial “political revenge.” Hasina herself said that the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) was not fair and that the verdict was already decided before the trial even started. She believes she was not given a fair chance to defend herself.
