What happened to Claude?
As animal lovers lamented the loss of nature’s novel creation, the California Academy said that Claude died after his valiant battle with a “suspected infection.” According to reports, the alligator received the best possible medical treatment from Steinhart Aquarium veterinarian and animal care teams.
“This heartbreaking outcome is not what we hoped for. A full exam and necropsy, to be conducted at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, will yield more information about the cause of death,” the release stated.
Why was the Albino Alligator so famous?
Claude was born with albinism in 1995 at an alligator farm located in Louisiana. It became a resident of the California Academy in 2008. His white appearance was due to a genetic mutation that gave his eyes a pinkish-red color. At the time of his death, the albino alligator measured 10 feet (3 meters) long and weighed 136 kilograms (300 pounds).
Over the years, Claude became an unofficial mascot of the museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. It not only captured hearts worldwide but was also featured in a children’s book and in advertisements at bus and light-rail stations, according to AP. His white skin and pink eyes made him easily recognizable. Beyond his charming appearance, Claude forged a deep public connection.
