If reports are to be believed, all is not well in the Bangladesh Army.  Bangladesh Army chief Waker-uz-Zaman ordered to put Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, a QuarterMaster General (QMG), under surveillance after he was allegedly involved in staging a coup in the Army and wanted to replace Zaman.

Zaman issued an order after the chief secretariat was flagged about a meeting called by Faizur Rahman without Zaman’s knowledge. Rahman is known as a Jamaat sympathiser.

Sources in the Bangladesh army said the meeting was called to garner support against the acting Army chief. The divisional commanders were asked to attend the meeting. Unfortunately, Rahamn did not receive enough support.

Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman had called a meeting of divisional commanders in the first week of March. The Army chief secretariat got the news and alerted the senior army officials. After the incident, the commanders retreated from the meeting.

It was noted that Rahman had several meetings with Jamaat leaders and diplomats of Pakistan. Zaman took a cue from it and put him on surveillance.

Zaman had already warned that a political crisis is behind the deteriorating law and order situation in the country.

Meanwhile, A court in Dhaka has ordered the seizure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi residence, ‘Sudasadhan’, and some other properties owned by her family members, who are in exile in India.

At the same time, the court ordered the seizure of 124 bank accounts belonging to her family, an official said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Ghalib issued the order on Tuesday following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
