Washington: Ahead of the US Presidential Elections 2024, Donald Trump raised the issue of the high tax imposed by India on American companies, particularly naming the Harley Davidson motorcycles and said that he will impose the reciprocal tax if voted into power.

Donald Trump who is the front-runner facing off Joe Biden, described India as a “tariff king”. In May 2013, the former US president terminated India’s preferential market access- The Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) to the US, stating that India has not given his country “equitable and reasonable access to its markets.”

During an interview which Donald trump game to Larry Kudlow of Fox Business News, he criticised India’s tax rates, allegedly saying that rates are quite high.

“The other thing I want to have is a matching tax where, if India charges us — India is very big with tariffs. I mean, I saw it with Harley-Davidson. I was saying, how do you do in a place like India? Oh, no good sir. Why? They have 100 per cent and 150 per cent and 200 per cent tariffs,” expressing his thoughts on rates the former president said.

The former US president, facing a series of court cases and indictments is leading the Republican presidential primaries and accounts for more than half of the GOP votes as per major national polls.
