Russian President Vladimir Putin is reported to follow an unusual wellness ritual involving baths made from the blood extracted from Siberian red deer antlers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to arrive in India on 4 December for a crucial two-day visit. Preparations in Delhi have been completed, with an extensive security grid deployed ahead of his landing between 6:00-6:30 PM. The 30-hour trip is considered strategically important, as Putin will participate in the 23rd Annual India-Russia Bilateral Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Controversial ‘blood bath’ ritual

According to a CNN report citing Russian local media, Putin is said to be among many Russians who have consumed the cut antlers of Siberian red deer and even bathed in their blood. Those who follow this ritual believe that the deer’s blood enhances physical strength and slows down ageing, a practice often referred to as a ‘blood bath.’

The popularity of this belief has reportedly given rise to an entire industry in Russia built around products derived from the blood and antlers of Siberian red deer.

Endorsed by Shoigu, rooted in traditional alternative therapy

Business Insider, citing investigative Russian outlet Proekt, reports that Putin tried the antler-blood bath on the recommendation of Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. Supporters of the practice claim that deer blood improves cardiovascular function and rejuvenates the skin, offering an anti-ageing effect.

These antlers are harvested during spring, when they are still soft and rich in blood. The extracted blood is then boiled in water, producing a pinkish mixture. Traditionally, individuals immerse themselves in this bath for 10 to 20 minutes.

As Putin lands in India today, discussions around this unusual ritual once again highlight the mystique surrounding one of the world’s most closely watched leaders.
