Moscow (Russia): The Russian president Vladmir Putin on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his independent foreign policy and called him a patriot of the nation. He made the remarks in his annual address to the Valdai Discussion Club, a think tank in Moscow, according to Reuters’ translation of Putin’s statement, which he made in Russian.

“A lot has been done under the leadership of PM Modi. He is a patriot of his country. His idea of ‘Make in India’ matters both economic wise and in ethics. Future belongs to India, it can be proud of the fact that it’s the largest democracy in the world,” the Kremlin said at Valdai Discussion Club, as per Reuters translation.

The Russian president described India’s progress as phenomenal in its transformation from a British colony to a modern state and noted that its approximately 1.5 billion people and tangible development achievements are grounds for everyone to respect and admire India.

“India has made tremendous progress in its development from being a British colony to a modern state. Almost 1.5 billion people & tangible development results give reasons for everyone’s respect & admiration for India,” he added.

He emphasised the bond between India and Russia even more, referring to it as exceptional.

“It is supported by a long-standing close ally relationship. We’ve always helped each other and never faced any challenging difficulties, and that is what is happening right now. I have no doubt it will in the future “as per Putin’s statement’s translation by Reuters.

Additionally, Putin emphasised that Prime Minister Modi had requested that he enhance the supply of fertilisers, which are crucial to Indian agriculture.

“Volume has increased 7.6 times. Agriculture trade has nearly doubled “He added, according to Reuters.

Putin’s speech to the Kremlin-affiliated institute comes as Russia, more than eight months after beginning its invasion on February 24, continues to deepen the conflict in Ukraine.

In his well-publicized speech, he also criticised the West for engaging in “dirty games” to maintain its global dominance and expressed his conviction that sooner or later “new centres of power will emerge in the multipolar world and the West will have to start talking as equals about our common future.”

He did, however, add that the US and its allies are not immune to the results of their own deeds. During the discussion, Putin stated that the West cannot ignore the issues it has sparked. The Russian president continued, “Only a world united by common goals can act on the issues it faces.
