The Punjab government of Pakistan has taken measures to tackle the adverse effects of smog by declaring a four-day public holiday in various districts, including the provincial capital, Lahore. This holiday will be in effect from November 9 to November 12, and it aims to address the ongoing smog crisis.

Punjab’s caretaker chief minister, Mohsin Naqvi, announced the decision during a press conference. He highlighted the severity of the situation by declaring an environment and health emergency in these divisions. As part of these measures, various establishments and activities will remain suspended to curtail the harmful impact of smog.

During these four days, educational institutions, both public and private offices, restaurants, cinemas, parks, and gyms will remain closed. Additionally, markets and business centers will remain shuttered over the weekend. However, essential services such as marriage halls, pharmacies, and bakeries will continue to operate as usual. It’s important to note that these holidays are specific to this week, aimed at addressing the immediate smog concerns.

Furthermore, Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that the primary reason for the spread of smog in Lahore and other parts of the province is the burning of crop residues in Indian Punjab. He has requested assistance from the caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to address this issue and engage with India on resolving the smog problem.

This proactive step by the Punjab government reflects their commitment to combat the serious issue of smog, which has adverse effects on public health and the environment.
