Powerful earthquake hits Russia: 5.8 magnitude quake jolts Kamchatka region

An earthquake of 5.8 magnitude struck the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on Monday. According to USGS, the quake struck at a shallow depth of 24 km. Earlier the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ)  recorded the earthquake magnitude as 6.4.

Why this Earthquake is alarming?

Scientists and experts are closely watching the developments as Monday's quake in Kamchatka comes mere months after a monster 8.8 earthquake in July this year. At that time 8.8 magnitude had triggered a Pacific-wide tsunami warning.

Various news reports suggest that, even though the July earthquake was extremely powerful — the strongest in the world since Japan’s 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and equal in strength to the 1906 Ecuador–Colombia and 2010 Chile earthquakes — it caused very little harm. Only one person died, and there was very little damage.
