A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck near the Yukon-Alaska border in Canada on Saturday afternoon, local time, according to CBC. Earthquakes Canada confirmed that the quake occurred at a depth of five kilometres. Following the tremor, Yukon Highways and Public Works announced via social media that the South Klondike Highway would be closed from kilometre 24 to kilometre 106 starting at 5 pm and would remain shut overnight due to heightened avalanche risks. Authorities said the road will be reassessed in the morning, with updates shared online.
Edwin Nissen, a Professor of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria, noted that earthquakes have previously been recorded in this region in 1899, 1979, 2002, and 2017. So far, CBC reported that no injuries or damage have been reported from the earthquake.
