Trump Celebrates Diwali At The White House
United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday joined the Diwali festivities at the White House and extended warm greetings to the Indian people on the occasion. He said that he had just spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and they had a great conversation. While speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, the Republican leader described PM Modi as a ‘great person’ and a ‘great friend.’
“Let me extend our warmest wishes to the people of India. I just spoke to your Prime Minister today. Had a great conversation. We talked about trade. He’s very interested in that,” Trump said in his initial remarks at the event. He further highlighted US-India trade & regional ties and New Delhi’s relations with Pakistan. “Although we did talk a little while ago about having no wars with Pakistan. The fact that trade was involved allowed me to discuss that. And we have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing. He’s a great person, and he’s become a great friend of mine over the years.”
Meanwhile, shedding light on the symbolic value of the festival, the US President added, “In a few moments, we’ll light the Diya as a symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness… It’s knowledge over ignorance and good over evil. During Diwali, the revelers recall ancient stories of enemies defeated, obstacles removed, and captives free. The glow of the Diya flame reminds us to seek the path of wisdom and to work with diligence and to always give thanks for our many blessings…” Following his statements, Trump lit up the diyas at the White House to celebrate the festival.
