Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as president of Russia are bound to meet each other In the upcoming India Russia Summit. Discussions are expected to focus on enhancing the trade and financial cooperation between the two nations. It is possible that both countries might focus on using local currencies and payment systems to forge better cooperation. The development in economic ties will help in reducing vulnerabilities linked to sanctions and external pressure.
Summit States and Strategic Partnership
The summit will be held on 4-5 December 2025, in New Delhi. This will be Putin’s first visit to India since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. With strategic discussions, both nations will be inspecting the full scope of their partnership with each other.
Defence and Security Deals on Agenda
Cooperation in the defence dynamic remains among the main areas of discussion. As per media reports, India is likely to explore the possibility of acquiring additional air defence systems and more units of the S-400 missile defence system. The discussion may also include the purchase of the next-generation S-500 missile system and advanced fighter jets.
Joint Production and Technology Transfer
Discussions will include deeper collaboration with co-development and joint manufacturing in missiles, submarines, aviation, and other defence-related technologies. This will support India’s goal for self-reliance in defence supplies. Energy cooperation will remain a central topic of discussion, and it is possible that both countries might converse about the possibility of long-term energy commitments and agreements.
Beyond defence, both countries are expected to explore possibilities of expanding cooperation in industrial production, transport, and infrastructure, including joint ventures under India’s manufacturing push, and possibly revising trade in sectors such as metallurgy, engineering, and high-technology industries.
It is possible that right after the meeting, a joint statement and intergovernmental and business sector agreements/MOUs could be signed. These may relate to a variety of areas such as defence, energy, trade, finance, and technology.
