Bali: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping shook hands Tuesday at a side event at the G20 Summit in Bali.

The handshake gesture drew attention because of the strained relations between the two countries over a border clash in eastern Ladakh in April 2020.

A live video feed for the media from the welcome dinner hosted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo for G20 delegates showed the exchange between the two leaders.

There had been some speculation over a possible bilateral meeting between the two leaders on the margins of the Group of 20 Summit, which began Tuesday. But the agenda made known by both sides so far does not slot such a meeting, as reported by news agency PTI.

PM Modi and the Chinese President were present at the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Uzbek city of Samarkand in September, but had maintained a safe distance.

The Prime Minister, during the day, met United States President Joe Biden and reviewed India – US strategic partnership.

“They reviewed the continuing deepening of the India – US strategic partnership including cooperation in future oriented sectors like critical and emerging technologies, advanced computing, artificial intelligence, etc,” the Prime Minister’s office said.

They expressed satisfaction about the close cooperation between India and US in new groupings such as the Quad, I2U2, etc, it added.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
