A 7.4-magnitude earthquake jolted the Mindanao region in the Philippines on Friday morning (local time). Authorities have since raised an alarm with tsunami warnings following the quake. Shortly after that, tsunami warnings for Indonesia’s northern Sulawesi and Papua regions were also issued. These locations are over 300 km away from the epicenter of the Philippines earthquake.
BBC subsequently reported that the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center’s alert indicated that tsunami waves could rise up to 3 meters above normal tide levels along some coasts. Meanwhile, a few coasts of Indonesia and Palau could see waves rising slightly above normal levels.
According to Philippine authorities, the first tsunami waves are expected to hit before 11:43 local time. As these waves may stretch out for hours, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate immediately.
