Pakistan’s Jaffar Express narrowly escaped a bomb attack in Balochistan’s Nasirabad district on Sunday, police and railway officials stated. Unidentified attackers reportedly planted an explosive device on the railway track in the Shaheed Abdul Aziz Bullo area, targeting the Peshawar-bound train traveling from Quetta. Fortunately, the train passed through the area safely, and no casualties were reported.
Here’s what happened
Dawn quoted Nasirabad Senior Superintendent of Police Ghulam Sarwar as saying that police and security forces reached the site after the explosion, cordoned off the area and began an investigation. “A search operation has also been launched to trace the elements involved in the bomb attack,” he said. Meanwhile, railway officials stated that a portion of the track was damaged due to the blast, suspending railway traffic between Quetta and other parts of the country. The express dodged the bomb attack as the explosion occurred after the train had passed from the area. Therefore, no casualties were reported.
The Jaffar Express later resumed its journey to Peshawar after reaching Jacobabad in Sindh. Officials added that operations had only resumed on Sunday after a four-day suspension due to security concerns.
Previous attacks on Jaffar Express
Earlier on October 7, a massive blast occurred on a railway track in the Sindh province of Pakistan in which multiple coaches of the Jaffar Express were derailed, injuring several passengers. The train was bound to Quetta from Peshawar and targeted near the Sultankot area. The attack was carried out using a remote-controlled IED, as confirmed by the officials.
Baloch Republican Guards (BRG) had claimed responsibility for the attack on the Jaffar Express in SultanKot. Videos circulating on social media showed derailed coaches and injured passengers. “The train was attacked at a time when personnel of the occupying Pakistani Army were travelling on board. As a result of the explosion, several soldiers were killed and injured, and six coaches of the train derailed,” the Baloch Republican Guards said in a statement.
Earlier on September 24, a deadly bomb explosion targeted the Quetta-bound Jaffar Express in the Spizend area of Mastung, leaving twelve passengers, including women and children, injured. Railway authorities confirmed that six bogies derailed following the blast, with one carriage overturning, resulting in several injuries among the travellers inside.
