Pakistan’s CDF Asim Munir’s increasing might has made the religious fraternity a little worried. Mufti Taqi Usmani, who is associated with Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman’s party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F), has challenged Munir’s bestowed power. The mufti said that giving lifelong immunity to Munir under the 27th Constitutional Amendment is not right as per Islamic rules. Mufti Usmani said that bestowing power on Munir is “illegal”, and his party has also expressed displeasure with Shehbaz Sharif.
Accountability debate in Pakistan
According to News18, Mufti Usmani has raised questions over exemptions given to the top leadership of the Pakistani Army. The Islamic scholar said that Islam does not allow anyone to be above accountability, whether he is a common man, ruler, military chief, or caliph. Any such exemption that makes a person unaccountable is un-Islamic.
Munir immunity sparks dispute
The CDF has received constitutional exemptions, and his involvement in any criminal or unconstitutional activity would not hold him liable throughout his life. In 2022, JUI (F)’s Usmani, who helped unseat former Prime Minister Imran Khan from power as part of the PDM, is upset with the immunity given to Munir.
JUI(F) attacks Shehbaz govt
The JUI (F) has blamed the Shehbaz Sharif government, stating that granting immunity to Munir is a violation of principles laid down in the Quran. JUI (F) chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman considers Shehbaz Sharif’s government a puppet, saying the real power lies in the hands of the Pakistani Army. The JUI (F) believes that Shehbaz’s PML-N and the PPP are enjoying power in the country.
As per the report, it is believed that Deobandi clerics are putting pressure on Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman to part ways with the current government, which is being seen as an “un-Islamic alliance”. Usmani’s remarks have further intensified the problems for the Shehbaz Sharif government.
