Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently serving a three-year jail term in a corruption case, faced interrogation regarding a missing diplomatic cable. The cable, previously touted by Khan as evidence of a US-backed conspiracy to oust him as prime minister, has been at the center of controversy. The investigation comes after Khan was booked under the Official Secrets Act for publicly disclosing the content of a confidential diplomatic cable from the country’s embassy in the US.

The investigation team from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) visited Khan in Attock Jail, where he admitted to losing the cypher but denied that the paper he had waved at a public gathering was the diplomatic cable. Khan clarified that the paper contained Cabinet meeting minutes, not the missing diplomatic communication.

The investigation agency had registered the case against Khan and his close aide, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, for misusing the cypher and its subsequent misplacement. The investigation also aims to determine the involvement of other associates, including Khan’s principal secretary, Azam Khan, and former planning minister Asad Umar.

Khan’s allegations of a US conspiracy have stemmed from the purported cypher, which detailed a meeting between US State Department officials and Pakistani envoy Asad Majeed Khan. The cypher claimed that the US encouraged the Pakistani government to remove Imran Khan as prime minister due to his neutrality on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The US State Department has repeatedly denied the authenticity of the document. The investigation into the missing diplomatic cable has further complicated Khan’s legal situation, with ongoing cases against him following his removal from office last year.

The outcome of the investigation could potentially impact Khan’s legal standing and future political prospects, including his eligibility to participate in upcoming general elections.
