Former Pakistani Intelligence director general Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed sentenced to 14-years in prison by a Pakistani military court on Thursday. The court awarded the verdict after a 15-month long court martial over charges of his political interference and violations of the official secrets act.
Field General Court Marshal held Faiz Hameed guilty
According to reports, the Field General Court Marshal held Faiz Hameed guilty on four counts which are-political interference, misuse of authority and state resources and violations of the official secrets act.
Officials maintained that Hameed was given full legal rights and representation. He also has an option to appeal. It is believed that Hameed is a close confidant of the Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Hameed was detained in 2024
He was detained in 2024 after his name surfaced in a probe in connection with a housing project in the country’s capital, Islamabad. A security analyst said Hameed’s case has become an example for all retired officers, regardless of rank, that their involvement in any political activity or abuse of office can land them in trouble.
Rare sentence of top Pak General
Experts are also of the view that Hameed’s case is a rare one where a person who attained a high position in the Pakistani military is facing such a sentence, in a system where the Army is believed to be involved in all kinds of state-related decisions and policies.
