A massive outrage erupted in Tehran after a video surfaced showing the daughter of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s aide wearing a plunging, strapless gown. The aide himself has enforced the hijab and dress code for women in the country.
People on social media, especially from within Iran, slammed the top leadership, terming it hypocrisy on the part of the Iranian regime and claiming that their “double lives” were on full display.
The viral video shows 70-year-old Ali Shamkhani, adviser to the supreme leader, walking alongside his daughter Fatemeh in the wedding hall as others cheer. Several women in the video were also seen without headscarves, further fuelling criticism online.
According to a report published by India Today, Ali Shamkhani is a military commander and a close aide of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He is responsible for enforcing the hijab and implementing policies related to women in public places. He has also previously served as the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).
The SNSC was responsible for suppressing the anti-hijab protests that took place in 2022, following the death of Mahsa Amini.
22-year-old Mahsa Amini died after slipping into a coma following her detention by Iran’s morality police, a dedicated unit that enforces strict dress codes for women, such as wearing the compulsory headscarf, media reports had said.
