Operation ‘Northern Arrows’: IDF Conducts Targeted Raids To Safeguard Citizens In Northern Israel

Israeli attacks killed 95 people on Monday after 105 people were reported to have been killed at the weekend.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have launched targeted, limited ground operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, opening a new stage of the longstanding conflict. The operations targeted areas near the border between Israel and Lebanon specifically the infrastructure of Hezbollah. The declaration came on Tuesday following high tensions and violence in that region. These operations are the result of IDF intelligence and coordinated planning with Israel’s leadership. The IDF aims to neutralize some of the immediate dangers that Hezbollah presents to Israeli towns and cities. The operation-the term used, “Northern Arrows”-involves ground invasions spearheaded by several waves of airstrikes.

The IDF confirmed yesterday that “limited, localized, and targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah had begun in southern Lebanon. According to the IDF, those operations are based on precise intelligence regarding Hezbollah’s activities and are conducted in areas posing threats to northern Israeli communities. Raids approved by political echelons to last only a few days.

The Israeli Air Force and IDF artillery are essential to the ground operation in attacking precise military positions linked to Hezbollah. According to the IDF, the operation aims to keep the citizens of Israel safe while pushing the forces of Hezbollah back from the border.
History and Escalating Tensions

Hezbollah has been exchanging fire with Israel since 8th October, after Hamas caught off guard Israel on the 7th of October, attacking the country. Hundreds dead; Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that Israeli attacks killed 95 people on Monday after 105 people were reported to have been killed at the weekend. Thousands of residents on either side have been displaced by the incidents.

As the attacks escalate, U.S. President Joe Biden is calling for de-escalation while a group of countries, including the EU, presses for a 21-day ceasefire in growing fears of a larger regional conflict.

Historical Background

These tensions have their causes deeply rooted within complex conflicts the nation has been involved in over the years, especially with Hezbollah, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization and Iranian proxy. Founded during the early 1980s to resist Israeli military actions, Hezbollah has been able to become a political force within Lebanon while retaining its militant capabilities.

The two had their last big war in 2006 during the Lebanon War. More damage has been done with massive casualties to both sides. Since then, uneasy quiet has been respected until now with this recent escalation sparked by the incendiary war in Gaza.

Since the Israeli Defense Forces’ operation in southern Lebanon continued, the situation there is still in flux, and upsurges in violence will be forthcoming. The local and international communities similarly watch with bated breath for a resolution that will secure both sides of the border. Their hopes are now for the stabilization of the region along with the diminution of the tensions that have sustained this protracted strife.
