New York Mayor Eric Adams on Monday announced that schools in New York City will be given a holiday on Diwali, the festival of lights. Let us tell you that Indians living in New York celebrate Diwali every year to celebrate the victory of light over darkness. Last year in 2022, President Biden and his wife celebrated Diwali at the White House.
Mayor Eric Adams called the moment momentous. “I’m so proud to stand with Assemblymember Jennifer Rajkumar and community leaders in campaigning for a school holiday this Diwali,” she wrote on Twitter. I know Diwali is a short time away, but Happy Diwali!
The mayor said that he is confident that Governor Cathy Hochul will sign the bill. Brooklyn Queens Day is a holiday on Diwali day in New York schools, which will now be replaced by Diwali holiday.
Following the mayor’s announcement, New York State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar tweeted, “My press conference with @NYCmayor at City Hall today. I am proud to have led and won the campaign for a Diwali school holiday with Mayor Eric Adams.
As the New York Times reports, Adams said New York is made for everyone. Doesn’t matter where you come from. Let us tell you that this year Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12, so for the first time in 2024 there will be a day off in the school. As reported by New York Times, in 2015 the city announced that it would declare school holidays for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
