At least five people, including a police officer and the suspected gunman, have died in a shooting incident that took place in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on Monday. According to reports, the lone gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, opened fire inside an office building, killing three civilians and an officer before turning the gun on himself. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. While the incident has caused widespread panic, police have confirmed that the shooter is dead.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams took to X (formerly Twitter) to extend his condolences to the family of the deceased officer. He said, “Tonight, our city is reeling and four innocent families are mourning, including the family of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was killed at 345 Park Avenue. He represented the best of New York City, an immigrant from Bangladesh who put on a uniform to protect and serve us all.” He also confirmed that he was present at the scene of the shooting in Midtown and stated that the shooter had been neutralised.
The visuals from the site showed a large number of officers gathered at the crime scene. Panic-stricken people were spotted running away while cops moved towards the office building. Another video circulating on social media platforms showed neighboring streets packed with police vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, and emergency personnel.
An eyewitness recalled the terrifying ordeal. News agency AFP quoted him as saying, “Everyone was confused with like, ‘wait, what’s going on?’ And then someone finally realized that it’s online, that someone walked in with a machine gun.” Another described the panic situation, saying, “I was in the building. He went floor by floor.”
