Party Releases Statement

Communist Party of Nepal General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel issued a statement on Thursday on behalf of the party’s central secretariat. The statement asked for strict legal action and wanted the people behind the violence to be identified. Pokharel said the movement, which began with demands for a social media ban, action against corruption, and better governance, was historic. The party said both public and private property were badly damaged in the violence, which it condemned. It also expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished a quick recovery for the injured.

Nepal Protests and Insurgency

Violent protests have entered their third day in Nepal. As of Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the death toll has risen to 30, while hundreds are injured. An increasingly fierce protest, led by Gen Z, erupted on Monday, August 8, with demands to lift the ban on social media platforms and government corruption. Following the massive youth-driven agitation, the demonstrators vandalised and set fire to outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s private residence in Balkot, Bhaktapur. Shortly after, he resigned from his post and reportedly fled the country.

KP Sharma Oli

Amid the ongoing protests that have begun to slow down in Nepal, ousted Prime Minister and chairman of CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli, addressed the Gen-Z protestors through a letter. In a written message, Oli expressed sorrow over the violent protests in Nepal that have claimed 30 lives so far. While paying tribute to those killed, Oli alleged that the forces behind the current movement are misleading the youth into destructive activities and that the incidents of arson in government offices are part of a well-planned political strategy.
