Nepal Protests: KP Sharma Oli resigned as Nepal’s Prime Minister on Tuesday, following ongoing violent protests over a ban on social media platforms. The political agitation has led to the death of 19 people, and more than 300 people were injured. A series of political twists unfolded on Monday, September 8, 2025, adding to the mounting chaos. Meanwhile, Oli fled to Kathmandu in a military aircraft.
As violence continues to escalate for the second day in Nepal, protestors on Tuesday vandalised and set fire to outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s private residence in Balkot, Bhaktapur. According to reports, the demonstrators have captured the house of the Nepalese Prime Minister.
As Nepal burns, a Nepali social media influencer claimed that many of those who lost their lives were students. “Students dressed in school uniform, even minors, were shot,” NDTV quoted Miss Nepal Earth 2022, Sareesha Shrestha, as saying in a TikTok video. She further alleged that the law enforcement officials broke into hospitals and attacked the injured.
Shrestha expressed that the peaceful protests, which began across Nepal, led to a heartbreaking tragedy for the entire country. On the other hand, Nepali social media influencer, Ruth Khadka, claimed that several students in school uniform were killed while leading peaceful protests. She alleged that girls and women who spoke against government corruption were raped in their own residences.
“People are met with violence by those who are supposed to guard them. The bullets were meant to be rubber bullets, but they were not. The police are supposed to protect the citizens and not kill them,” she added.
Nepal Protest
Videos circulating on social media showed the houses of Nepal’s political leaders being destroyed. Several clips have emerged showing protestors roaming through the house of the President and destroying it. The Gen Z demonstrators took to arson earlier and set ablaze the house of Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, and also pelted stones at Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel’s residence.
Demonstrators also torched ruling party offices and buildings in Janakpur. President Ramchandra Paudel’s private residence in Kathmandu was also vandalised, and parts of the property were set ablaze. Nepal has been witnessing political unrest since last Wednesday. The Gen Z protests were triggered by a social media ban, which was lifted by the Nepal Government late Tuesday night after violent clashes. However, just hours later, the demonstrators renewed their protest in Kathmandu.
