Who Is Ashok Raj Sigdel? Nepal’s Army Chief Trained in India, Now in Charge Of Restoring Peace Amid Violent Protests and Unrest

General Sigdel has an MA degree from Tribhuvan University in Nepal. Apart from this, he has also obtained a master's degree in strategy from the National Defense University of China.

After the spontaneous uprising of Gen Z in Nepal, President Ramchandra Paudel and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli have stepped down. The country remains on edge amid uncontrollable unrest that had kept the army on alert until yesterday. Now, the military has taken charge of restoring peace, law, and order. All eyes are on Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel as the army assumes full control of Nepal. Who is this General which have an Indian connection too.

Who Is Ashok Raj Sigdel?

General Sigdel was born on 1 February 1967 in Nepal. He is a professional and experienced military officer. On 9 September 2024, he became the Chief of the Nepali Army. He has studied and received training in Nepal, India, and China.

Because of this, he knows the military systems and strategies of both India and China. He got military education from both countries, but India and Nepal share a special bond. India has also given him the title of Honorary General of the Indian Army. This is why many people believe he is closer to India.

Military Career And Education

General Sigdel Took a Master of Arts (MA) degree from Tribhuvan University in Nepal. He has also obtained a master’s degree in strategy from the National Defence University of China. Various reports say that General had deep ties with India too. He completed his Defence Management In China’s National Defence University. There he had undergone special training related to army operations, strategy and management.

What Happened In Nepal?

Nepal has been witnessing unrest due to a group of people categorised as Gen Z taking to the streets with violent protests against the government for imposing a social media ban. Former Nepal Prime Minister and CPN (Unified Socialist) senior leader Jhalanath Khanal’s wife, Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar, succumbed to burn injuries on Tuesday after their residence in Dallu was set ablaze by Gen Z protesters. According to party leader Naresh Shahi, she had sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Nepali Army Hospital in Chhauni, where she was admitted to the ICU. Despite efforts to save her, she tragically passed away during treatment.
