Nepal President Ram Chandra Poudel officially resigned on Tuesday amid ongoing violent Gen Z-led protests across the country. His resignation came just hours after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stepped down on Tuesday afternoon. The protests, which began on Monday, continued into Tuesday, with demonstrators storming and setting fire to the Parliament House, Oli’s private residence, and the homes of other Nepali Congress leaders.
KP Sharma Oli Flees Kathmandu After Resignation
KP Sharma Oli, who resigned on Tuesday following the ongoing massive protests that have left 19 dead and more than 500 injured, has left Kathmandu in a military helicopter. It is not yet clear where he has gone; however, visuals show Oli departing the capital by military aircraft.
According to reports, he is accompanied by seven ministers. The Nepal Army in Kathmandu has started evacuating the government residences of ministers. Ministers are being evacuated from their residences and taken to safe places by helicopter. Apart from this, security has been increased around the Parliament building. At the same time, security is being provided to high officials in military cantonments.
Kathmandu Mayor ‘Balen’ Calls For Restraint
Meanwhile, following Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah ‘Balen’ has urged Gen Z protesters to exercise restraint. The protest, which turned violent on Monday, continued on Tuesday, with demonstrators taking to the streets to protest against corruption. His statement comes after KP Oli stepped down from the post on afternoon, and the situation that remains uncontrolled.
