Nepal Gen Z Protest Live Updates –  Sushila Karki Takes Oath As Interim PM

Protests continued in Nepal for the second day on Tuesday despite the government announcing that it had lifted the ban on social media platforms.

Nepal Gen Z Protest Live Updates- The “Gen Z” protesters have called on former chief justice Sushila Karki to be appointed as the interim prime minister, the secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association who was contacted by protesters told Reuters. Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah is another potential candidate for the prime minister’s position and also expressed his informal support for Karki, calling on President Ram Chandra Paudel to immediately create an interim government and dissolve the parliament. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Nepal’s Kathmandu felt the airport had reopened a day after it was closed due to violent anti-corruption protests, a spokesperson for the airport told Reuters.

Causes & reasons for Nepal protest: Although the protests’ immediate cause was a now-reliquished social media ban, there were a wide range of grievances building in Nepal for some time now, especially regarding political leadership and corruption allegations. According to a World Bank report, “Nepal’s economic growth accelerated in the first half of FY25 (H1FY25). Real GDP grew by 4.9 percent in H1FY25, up from 4.3 percent in H1FY24”. However, this number does not present the full picture. Job creation is slow, inequality, worsened by climate vulnerabilities and natural disasters, is high, and many among the young are leaving the country.”
