Nepal’s president and army chief will hold a key meeting Friday with the ex-chief justice tipped as a possible interim leader, as well as a leading youth activist, a protester representative said.

“A meeting has been scheduled for this afternoon with the president, the army chief, former chief justice Sushila Karki, our representative Sudan Gurung and one legal expert,” Nimesh Shrestha, who was part of the Gen Z protest, told AFP.

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki on Thursday arrived at the Army Headquarters, fueling speculation about her emerging role as the front-runner for the Prime Minister’s post.

The Mayor of Kathmandu, Balendra Shah, gave his approval in the name of Chief Justice Sushila Karki. He urged the President to dissolve the Parliament as soon as possible and call for elections to form a new government.

The Indian Foreign Ministry has issued an advisory for Indian media personnel covering events in Nepal. The ministry said that our media representatives who are in Nepal are advised to be cautious. They are expected to stay away from sensational coverage. They are told not to support any side. Reporting should be based only on facts, and no personal judgment or comment should be made on issues like 'royalty', 'Hindu rashtra'. Such discussions can lead to inciting anti-India sentiments.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has arrested five convicts who were attempting to cross into India after they escaped from a jail in Nepal. The arrest was made along the India-Nepal border in the Siddharthnagar area and the prisoners were handed over to the police for further investigation, ANI reported while citing officials.

According to the Nepal army, 31 looted firearms with ammunition were recovered after the protests occurred on Tuesday. The army also reported that 23 police personnel and three civilians suffered injuries and were treated at military hospitals relating to the violence that manifested. Officials mentioned that protesters that infiltrated the generation's Z movement, also brought along fire extinguishers and used them to put out fires they themselves had started. To-date, 27 individuals have been arrested for looting, arson, and violent assaults across Kathmandu and other areas, Khabarhub reported.

Reports suggest that 572 inmates escaped from Jaleshwar prison in Mahottari after protesters and prisoners together breached the prison wall.

Russia on Tuesday expressed concern over the ongoing situation in Nepal, urging a peaceful resolution to the political crisis and advising its citizens against traveling to the Himalayan nation.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry called for the crisis to be resolved within the framework of Nepal's national laws and expressed hope for a swift return to normalcy in what it described as a “friendly country.”

Moscow said it is closely following the situation, which it noted has escalated from mass protests to violent riots resulting in casualties. The ministry added that, based on current information, no Russian nationals have been affected. It also confirmed that the area surrounding the Russian Embassy in Kathmandu remains calm.

Troops additionally secured Singhdurbar, the main government secretariat, after protesters set fire to houses inside the complex. The army moved in following the evacuation of agitators. Soldiers also stepped in when demonstrators tried to vandalise the gate of the Pashupatinath Temple.
