The ascension of Asim Munir’s name for the post of Chief of Defence Forces, created following the constitutional amendment in Pakistan, is facing persistent delay. Munir was expected to take over the post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) following a constitutional amendment in Pakistan, but his position shift has been witnessing persistent delay.
The change in positions was supposed to take place by November 29, but even after a week, the Shahbaz Sharif government has not issued a notification. It is being purported that there has been a specific reason behind this delay. As per media reports, Nawaz Sharif is actively involved in delaying the matter and is seeking the possibility of a profitable deal before the change takes place.
Whats the delay about?
The delay, as per a News18 report, is due to ongoing negotiations between former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz, and Asim Munir. The Sharif family leadership wants political guarantees, influence over key appointments in the military, and assurances about the future government. Nawaz Sharif is in the pursuit of becoming the Prime Minister for a fourth time, complicating the new changes.
What is the Murree Plan
All of these changes are taking place under the Murree Plan. This plan was finalised in August in the city of Murree between Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Asim Munir, Asim Malik, and Mohsin Naqvi. Sources said that the plan outlines a 10-year political–military framework. Under this plan, the army seeks to help Nawaz Sharif become prime minister in exchange for giving Munir a five-year term.
Nawaz Sharif wants to appoint officers who support his political views to key positions. These negotiations are complex, since they are being fuelled by greed rather than reason. In the coming days, there will be more clarity on the Murree Plan, which will have broader implications that could shape Pakistan’s political and military dynamics for years to come. The entire matter reflects the ongoing tussle between Pakistan’s political and military forces.
The delay will soon be resolved, and Asim Munir is expected to be appointed as the CDF soon.
