Protesters stormed the Bangladesh consulate in New York and took down the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of the country. Visuals showed protesters barging into the building and removing the portrait amid escalating unrest in the country over job quota protests.

Background of the Protests

Bangladesh has been experiencing significant unrest for several weeks due to job quota protests, which have recently intensified with demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The violent uprising has resulted in the deaths of at least 100 people. On Monday, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country.

Attack on the Consulate

The reason behind the attack on the consulate in the US, far from the violence-hit country, remains unclear. A video of the incident showed protesters, some wearing caps in the colors of the Bangladesh flag, involved in a commotion. The footage also depicted individuals removing various items from the consulate office.

Current Political Situation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is currently awaiting the formation of a new government following Sheikh Hasina’s escape to India on a military aircraft. Reports suggest she is considering asylum in the United Kingdom. However, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has denied these reports, stating that she has no plans to return to Bangladesh.

Student protest leaders in Bangladesh are scheduled to meet with army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman today. They have called for Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to lead the interim government as the country navigates this period of political uncertainty
