More Than A Showpiece: PM Modi Gifts West Bengal–Crafted Miniature Elephant Ambawari To Ghana’s Parliament Speaker

The white elephants are more than just an ivory showpiece; rather, they carry nobility in ornate howdahs inspired by the ceremonial processions.

In a gesture symbolizing the Indian heritage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, presented the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament – a miniature elephant ambawari. The intricately designed artifact, gifted to Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, is deeply rooted in India’s majestic and rich artistic heritage. The white elephants are more than just an ivory showpiece; rather, they carry nobility in ornate howdahs inspired by the ceremonial processions.

The exquisite miniature elephant ambawari is handcrafted in West Bengal. Every life-like detail, from the floral motifs to the miniature seat atop the elephant, is carved with precision by skilled artisans. Moreover, the richly adorned elephant, encased in a transparent display box, celebrates Bharat’s regal pageantry and timeless legacy.

On the other hand, PM Modi also gifted a fine Bidri artwork vase to Ghanaian President John Mahama and a Silver Filigree Work to his spouse, Lordina Mahama. Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister was conferred the national honour of Ghana, Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, by President John Dramani Mahama, in recognition of his “distinguished” statesmanship and influential global leadership.

Addressing the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, PM Modi expressed that he felt deeply honoured to speak in a country that radiates the spirit of democracy. During his speech, he also took a moment to express greetings from 1.4 billion Indians to the people of Ghana. Meanwhile, he highlighted the shared colonial past of India and Ghana, stating that “our spirits have always remained free and fearless” despite the scars of foreign rule. He also added that the friendship between the two countries is “sweeter” than the famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple (A delicacy of Ghana).
