This earthquake has caused heavy loss of life and property in Afghanistan. Many houses and buildings collapsed, injuring people after being buried under the debris. Satin village of Darah-e-Noor district has suffered the most damage.
According to the National Seismology Center (NCS), four tremors were felt even after the main earthquake that occurred at 12:47 am. These included a 4.7 magnitude earthquake at 1 am, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at 1:59 am, a 5 magnitude earthquake at 3:03 am and a 5 magnitude earthquake at 5:16 am.
According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), these earthquakes were felt till Pakistan, where people came out of their homes in Islamabad. Tremors were also felt in the Delhi-NCR region of India, but there was no significant damage there.

Afghanistan is an earthquake-prone region as it is located at the confluence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. When the Indian plate is pushed under the Eurasian plate, the Hindu Kush mountain region shakes and deep and superficial earthquakes often occur here. Major fault lines such as the Chaman Fault and the Hari Rud Fault cause earthquakes. Apart from this, the geological structure of Afghanistan is also responsible for earthquakes, because the unstable rocks and houses made of mud here are easily destroyed by earthquake tremors.
