Mexico City: On the anniversary of two terrible earthquakes, a strong tremor shook buildings in western Mexico, knocked out power, and forced the people of Mexico City to flee to the streets for safety.

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck near the coast on the Michoacan and Colima state border at a depth of about 15 km (9 miles) shortly after 1 p.m. (1800 GMT), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

There were no initial reports of damage in the nation’s capital, according to Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, following the earthquakes that struck Mexico on the same day as devastating quakes that struck the nation in 1985 and 2017.

“It’s this date, there’s something about the 19th,” said Ernesto Lanzetta, a business owner in the Cuauhtemoc borough of the city. “The 19th is a day to be feared.”
