In the midst of a diplomatic disagreement, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has formally requested India to withdraw its military personnel from the country by March 15. This development follows President Muizzu’s recent high-profile state visit to China.
According to the latest government data, there are currently 88 Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the public policy secretary at the President’s Office, stated in a press briefing that the policy of President Muizzu and his administration is that Indian military personnel cannot remain in the Maldives.
A high-level core group convened to negotiate the withdrawal of troops held its inaugural meeting at the Foreign Ministry Headquarters in Male’. The meeting included the presence of Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar. Nazim confirmed the meeting and indicated that the primary agenda was the formal request for the withdrawal of troops by March 15. The situation reflects a sensitive diplomatic issue between the two nations.

After assuming office as the President of Maldives on November 17 last year, Mohamed Muizzu, identified as a pro-China leader, officially asked India to withdraw its military personnel from the country. Muizzu stated that the Maldivian people had given him a “strong mandate” to make this request to New Delhi.
The call for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel adds to existing tensions between the two nations, sparked by derogatory comments made by three deputy ministers of the Muizzu government against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following these social media postings, Muizzu took action by suspending the three ministers. The incident raised concerns in India and led to calls for a boycott by Indian tourists, who constituted the highest number of visitors, followed by those from Russia. Chinese tourists ranked third in terms of visitor numbers. The diplomatic situation reflects the complexities in the relationships between Maldives, India, and China.
