Students to fulfill criteria

The move aims to restrict foreign nationals from overstaying in the United States. If foreign nationals stay on H1-B or student visas, they would not be affected, but those who stay without proper authorisation would face action. The students have to also fulfill the norms during their stay in the country.

“Message to Illegal Aliens”

The department stated in its post titled “Message to Illegal Aliens” that foreign nationals without clearance of authorities must self-deport. It also listed benefits if anyone does so.

“Self-deportation is safe. Leave on your own terms by picking your departure flight. Keep money earned in the US if you self-deport as a non-criminal illegal alien,” the department says.

Department listed Benefits

In its post, Homeland Security also assures the self-deportation would have the opportunity to get legal immigration in the future and if the deportees do not have enough money for flight tickets, they are eligible for the subsidised fare.

The Trump administration has already taken stern measures on illegal immigrants. The US has also warned foreign students who participate in protests at the campus.

Judge ruled Columbia University student’s deportation

On April 11, An immigration judge ruled that Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil can be deported from the US due to his involvement in leading pro-Palestinian protests held at the campus in 2024, Fox News reported.

On Friday, Judge Jamee Comans ruled Khalil can be deported as the US government met its burden of proof to deport him. “I would like to quote what you said last time that there’s nothing that’s more important to this court than due process rights and fundamental fairness,” Khalil told the court.
