US-Canada Tariff Row: In a dramatic turn of events on Monday, Canada successfully managed to secure a 30-day delay in the implementation of Tariffs by US President Donald Trump on the country’s goods. The development comes just a few hours after Trump announced a 25% imposition on Canadian and Mexican goods with an additional 10% levy on goods from China. Trump held a high-stakes phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau which led to an agreement between the two close allies. In light of the looming cross-border trade, the US President on Monday shared details of the deal between the two neighbours.
Trudeau Announces $1.3 billion Border Plan
Meanwhile, in an X post, PM Justin Trudeau said, “Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology, and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.” He further added that Canada is appointing a Fentanyl Czar and is planning to list cartels as terrorists.
In addition, Trudeau said it will ensure 24/7 eyes on the border and launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering. The deal seems to satisfy both sides, particularly at a time when there are ongoing heated trade tensions between the US and Canada.

Trump Pauses Tariffs On Canadian Goods
In return, Trump stated he would pause tariffs on goods from Canada for a period of 30 days. This means Canada has crucial time to negotiate the ongoing trade dispute. On the other hand, Trump also confirmed on his ‘Truth Social’ X handle that he had a very friendly conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and she agreed to supply 10,000 soldiers on the Border separating both the countries.
