In her first statement following her release from jail, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia appealed to her fellow citizens to work towards creating a "democratic Bangladesh that respects all religions."
In a video message in Bangla, Khaleda Zia expressed her gratitude for the prayers and support for her health. She acknowledged the blessings of Allah and the sacrifices made by many to achieve independence from the previous government.
She also cautioned against attacks on religious minorities, urging the creation of a peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh where all religions are respected, and there is no place for revenge and hatred.
Background and Current Status
Khaleda Zia, 79, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for corruption in 2018 during Sheikh Hasina's rule. She was released on an executive order from President Mohammed Shahabuddin after the fall of the Awami League government. The BNP chairperson is now receiving treatment for several health issues.
