Gen Z wants Sushila Karki: Now it’s official! Gen-Z protesters unveiled their ten-point agenda at a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday. After three days of unrest, the youth representatives, who had been at the center of the countrywide protests, presented their plan to end the violent demonstrations that had pressured the Prime Minister and other ministers to step down. Diwakar Dangal, Amit Baniya, and Junal Dangal addressed the media, outlining the steps they hope will bring stability to the nation. This agenda includes demands ranging from dissolving the parliament to constitutional amendment and formation of an interim government. The anger of the youth that started with the social media ban in Nepal has now turned into an organized movement.

The interim government should have nine ministers, with three each from Gen-Z, Gen-Y, and Gen-X, ensuring every generation has a say.

  • 3 ministers from Gen-Z (the youngest generation, roughly born mid-1990s to early 2010s)
  • 3 ministers from Gen-Y (also called Millennials, born roughly 1980–1995)
  • 3 ministers from Gen-X (born roughly 1965–1980)

Diwakar Dangal, Amit Baniya and Junal Dangal – all representatives of the Gen Z group – were among those who spoke at the press meet. They also said that they didn’t want any political parties to claim or hijack the movement.

“This is purely a civilian movement, so don’t try to play politics with this,” one activist said. “There is a challenge in front of us to protect national sovereignty, unity, and maintain self-respect,” Dangal said. “We all Nepalese should unite in this difficult situation to protect the welfare and and interests of the Nepalese people.”

Some protesters supported former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister, while others put forward the name of Kulman Ghising, former CEO of Nepal Electricity Authority. At the same time, some activists said that the Gen-Z group itself does not want to take part in power, but wants to play the role of a watchdog. Rapper-politician and Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah, and another independent mayor, Harka Sampang, were also heard as frontrunners for the Nepal PM post.
