Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Monday gave a significant reaction to India’s economic progress. He described the Indian economy as “fascinating” and praised its strength. In an interview to ANI, he praised the economic reforms undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the results of these reforms speak for themselves.
When he was asked to react to US President Donald Trump’s comment in which Trump called India a “dead economy”, Smotrich gave an opposite opinion. He said, “Indian economy is really exciting. The way Prime Minister Modi is promoting free market and competition, its results are clearly visible. With an annual growth rate of 6 percent, I think India’s economy will grow even faster. I am confident that India is on the right track.” It is noteworthy that Trump wrote on ‘Truth Social’ on July 31, “I don’t care what India does to Russia. They can go down with their dead economies. We have very little trade with India, their tariffs are the highest in the world. Similarly, trade between Russia and the US is almost negligible …”
This positive comment by Smotrich came on August 29, the same day when official data revealed that India’s real GDP is estimated to grow by 7.8 percent in the April-June quarter of the financial year 2025-26, which is more than the 6.5 percent recorded in the same quarter last year. These figures were released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI).
Currently, the fourth-largest economy in the world, India is on track to become the third-largest economy, with a GDP of US $7.3 trillion, by the year 2030. According to officials, this growth momentum is the result of decisive leadership, visionary policies, and active cooperation at the global level.
