At least five Al Jazeera journalists were killed in a targeted Israeli strike outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza on Sunday. In the assault, considered one of the deadliest assaults on media personnel since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza conflict, two Al Jazeera correspondents, Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa lost their lives, Al Jazeera reported.
Shortly after the strike, the Israeli Military confirmed the killing al-Sharif in a post on X, alleging that the Al Jazeera journalist was the head of a Hamas terrorist cell and had carried out advanced rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and IDF troops. “STRUCK: Hamas terrorist Anas Al-Sharif, who posed as an Al Jazeera journalist Al-Sharif was the head of a Hamas terrorist cell and advanced rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and IDF troops. Intelligence and documents from Gaza, including rosters, terrorist training lists, and salary records, prove he was a Hamas operative integrated into Al Jazeera,” the IDF wrote.

The IDF confirmed that Anas al-Sharif was a Hamas operative integrated into Al Jazeera, alleging that intelligence and documents such as rosters, terrorist training lists, and salary records from Gaza proved it. The Al Jazeera Media Network, in a statement, strongly condemned the killings, calling them “another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom”.
“This attack comes amid the catastrophic consequences of the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, which has seen the relentless slaughter of civilians, forced starvation, and the obliteration of entire communities,” the network added. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has confirmed the killing of at least 186 journalists since October 7, 2023, the outlet said.
The strike came hours after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu told foreign media he had directed the military to allow more foreign journalists into the Gaza Strip, as per Al Jazeera reports.
