Israel launched an airstrike with “barrages of missiles, targeting Damascus International Airport and its surrounds” at around 2:00 am (23:00 GMT), a military source informed SANA. Two troops died in the incident, which also forced the closure of the Damascus International Airport.
According to ABC News, Israel has reportedly targeted airports and ports in government-held areas of Syria in an apparent effort to stop Iranian militant groups, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah, from receiving military shipments.
Israeli airstrikes reportedly attacked an airfield and an arms storage adjacent to the facility south of Damascus, according to an opposition war monitor.
Israel has not yet commented on the attack at Damascus International Airport, according to ABC News.
The army noted that the attack, which was the first of the year, had left behind physical damage in the neighbourhood but withheld further information.
It was the second time in less than a year that the Damascus International Airport had been shut down.
Infrastructure and runways were severely damaged by Israeli airstrikes that hit Damascus International Airport on June 10.
After renovations, it reopened two weeks later.
