The Israeli armed forces inadvertently killed three hostages held in Gaza by Hamas during a recent incident, announced a military spokesperson on Friday. The incident is currently under thorough review by the military.
According to military reports, the fatalities occurred amid combat operations against militants in Gaza. The military conveyed its condolences to the victims’ families and assured “full transparency” throughout the investigation into the tragic event.
A statement from the military explained that during intense fighting in Gaza, the forces mistakenly identified three Israeli hostages as a threat. Consequently, the troops fired at them, resulting in their unfortunate deaths.

The deceased hostages were identified as Yotam Haim, abducted from Kibbutz Kfar, Samer Talalka from Kibbutz Nir Am, and Alon Shamriz from Kibbutz Kfar Aza. All were taken captive by Hamas on Oct. 7, as confirmed by the military.
The Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum, representing the hostages’ families, expressed condolences and provided insights into the lives of the victims. Yotam was described as a talented musician and ardent fan of the band Megadeth, while Samer was known for his passion for motorcycle riding and socializing. Alon was remembered by his loved ones as someone who cherished life and was a devoted basketball enthusiast.
The recent period witnessed heightened conflict between Israel and Hamas militants, with Israel reporting significant casualties, including 10 soldiers within 24 hours.
Hamas initiated hostilities on Oct. 7, causing casualties and taking hostages. Israel responded, resulting in numerous casualties, according to Gaza health authorities.
During a temporary ceasefire in late November, Hamas released over 100 detainees, including women and children, in exchange for the release of others arrested on charges related to confrontations with Israeli forces. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the three hostages, offering condolences to their grieving families.
Subsequently, protests erupted outside Israel’s central military base in Tel Aviv, demanding immediate action regarding the remaining hostages in Gaza.
Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military confirmed the retrieval of three Israelis’ bodies – a civilian and two soldiers – who had been held captive by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
