Israel Calls Iron Beam A ‘Technological Breakthrough’: What Is Special About  Laser-Based Air Defense System?

Israel said that the system is expected to integrate into Israel's multi-layered defense array as a complementary capability to the Iron Dome system.

Israel is gearing up to equip and strengthen its defense system by adding Iron Beam, a new laser-based, air-defence system to tackle projectiles. With its Iron Dome- one of the best missile shields, Israel showed to the world, its manufacturing prowess. Now, taking a step further, Israel is expected to integrate Iron Beam systems in its defense network soon.  The laser defense system will complement the country’s Iron Dome and other defense systems, heralding in a ‘new era of warfare’, the Israeli Defence ministry said.

Iron Beam To Be Operational Soon

Israel’s Ministry of Defense said that these laser based, Iron beam system will be operational within a year. “The Iron Beam system represents a global technological breakthrough, with its impressive interception capabilities demonstrated through a series of successful trials,” said Ministry of Defense, Israel.

As per reports, this announcement came after the government signed an armament agreement with contractors Rafael and Elbit to accelerate the development of the Iron Beam directed-energy weapon. The deal was signed by the Director General of the Ministry of Defense, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir in a ceremony at the Ministry’s headquarters in Tel Aviv.

What Is Iron Beam?

Iron Beam is a ground-based high-power laser air defense system designed to counter aerial threats, including rockets, mortars, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and cruise missiles. The Iron Beam system is expected to cost Israel over $500 million. This system will help Israel to engage and neutralise missiles, drones, rockets and mortars. It will have an unlimited magazine. Notably, the Iron Beam can engage at the speed of light from a range of hundreds of meters to several kilometers. It is developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems –who earlier constructed Israel’s Iron Dome, and Elbit Systems.

This development comes in time when Israel is actively carrying out operation against Hezbollah and Hamas in Lebanon and Palestine.

“The IMod’s DDR&D’s R&D Unit leads the project with primary developers Rafael and Elbit Systems. The Iron Beam system represents a global technological breakthrough, with its impressive interception capabilities demonstrated through a series of successful trials,” added Ministry of Defense, Israel.

MOD, Israel further said that the system is expected to integrate into Israel’s multi-layered defense array as a complementary capability to the Iron Dome system. This integration will significantly enhance Israel’s defense capabilities against current and future threats, offering lower operational costs.
