ISIS claims attack on Pakistan embassy in Afghanistan

New Delhi: The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for last week’s gun attack on the Pakistani embassy in Afghanistan in which the head of the mission escaped unharmed but a guard was wounded.

The embassy came under attack on Friday and a Pakistani security guard was wounded by gunfire in what Islamabad called “an assassination attempt” and had demanded immediate investigation & action against perpetrators.

In a brief statement late Saturday, IS claimed two of its fighters attacked “the renegade Pakistani ambassador and his guards” while they were in the Pakistani embassy’s yard, wounding a guard and inflicting damage to the building, as reported by AP.

Friday’s assault in the Afghan capital Kabul wounded Pakistani guard Israr Mohammad, who belongs to the military’s commando unit. But the mission’s chief, Ubaid-ur-Rehman NizamaniIt, was unharmed.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on the day of attack, called it “an assassination attempt” on the head of the mission and demand immediate investigation & action against perpetrators.

“I strongly condemn dastardly assassination attempt on Pakistan’s Head of Mission, Kabul,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

“Salute to brave security guard, who took bullet to save his life. Prayers for the swift recovery of security guard. I demand immediate investigation & action against perpetrators of this heinous act,” he had said.
