Islamabad: Pakistani parliamentarian Ishaq Dar on Wednesday took oath as Country’s new finance minister, a day after he was sworn in as a senator.

President Arif Ali on Wednesday administered the oath of office to the veteran politician during a brief ceremony in the capital Islamabad.

Dar replaced his own party leader Miftah Ismail, who tendered his resignation to the country’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif after serving office for five months.

According to reports, this is the fourth time Dar, aged 72, has been given the portfolio.

His appointment comes at a time when the South nation country is ravaged by devastating floods that killed over 1600 people and destroyed houses, roads, crops and railway connectivity.

“We will control inflation. We will bring interest rates down,” he told reporters after taking oath.

Dar, a senior politician in the ruling party of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, flew to Islamabad on Monday night after ending five years in self-exile in London, news agency Reuters reported.

In 2017, he had been facing corruption charges, but last week an anti-graft court suspended warrants for his arrest, enabling his return.
