The social media platforms are flooded with a buzz of a coup by the Bangladesh Army after the armed forces were reportedly deployed across the nation. Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman did not comment on any such development or news so far. The interim leader Muhammed Yunus has been facing protests in the past few days.
The media reports suggested that a large number of meetings of Army officials took place which fueled such speculations. Zaman had already warned of threats like a rise in terrorism amid political uncertainty in the country.
Several political analysts are of the view that Zaman’s meetings with his top General are good enough to apprise the situation that all is not well between the interim government and the Army. Sources say that Zaman is concerned about the rising terrorism in the country.
Meanwhile, Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and director of policy analysis at the Middle East Forum, has raised concerns about the trajectory of Bangladesh under the interim leadership of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Rubin, in his recent article for 19FortyFive, suggested that Yunus, renowned for his pioneering work in microfinance, is now overseeing actions that suppress journalistic freedom and enable hardline Islamist groups such as Jamaat-e-Islami to exert influence over the nation’s socio-political landscape.
