The Iranian media has released a dramatic video of a 42-year-old man whom they claim to be a Mossad spy. He was accused of infiltrating military-linked facilities and collecting sensitive data during the recent 12-day war between Iran and Israel. According to the Iranian media, he attempted to recruit people with promises of $120 million and U.S. residency. However, there are also reports that he was framed for writing a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He was reportedly arrested after he sent a message to President Zelenskyy, offering to join Ukrainian forces against Russian soldiers.
Who was Babak Shahbazi?
Babak Shahbazi, a 44-year-old Iranian Engineer, was specialised in industrial cooling systems for telecommunications and military infrastructure. He was a contractor who took government work in Iran. Various reports says that he was arrested by the Iranian army in 2022 for sending a Microsoft Word message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offering support against Russia’s invasion—amid Iran’s supply of drones to Moscow. However, Shahbazi was accused by authorities of being a Mossad spy who collected and sold sensitive data on Iranian data centers for $120 million in cryptocurrency and promises of relocation.

Human rights groups, including Iran Human Rights and Amnesty International, say the charges against Babak Shahbazi were fabricated. They claim he was tortured, kept in solitary confinement, and forced to confess, while also being denied proper legal access. According to these groups, his case reflects a wider pattern of politically motivated executions in Iran, coming amid growing tensions with Israel following their June 2025 conflict. His execution by hanging was done on September 17, 2025, at Ghezel Hesar prison near Tehran. Iran also accused him of collaborating with Esmaeil Fekri, another convict executed by the Iranian regime earlier this year.
