Indonesia School Building Collaspe: At least one student was killed and 65 others were injured after an under-construction building at an Islamic boarding school collapsed on Monday (September 29, 2025) in the East Java town of Sidoarjo. According to reports, the tragic incident occurred while dozens of students were praying. A search operation is currently underway to rescue those buried under the rubble.
Upon receiving information, the rescue team rushed to supply oxygen and water to the trapped students. In the overnight rescue effort, eight frail students were pulled out from the concrete rubble at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School. Authorities fear the death toll will likely increase as more bodies are visibly buried.
Families and relatives of the students gathered at hospitals, anxiously watching rescuers pull the weak and injured students from the unstable prayer hall. The wounded are reported as mostly boys, studying in classes 7 to 11, between the ages of 12 and 17.
According to Provincial police spokesperson Jules Abraham Abast, the students were offering afternoon prayers in a building undergoing construction work when it fell on top of them. Some survivors said that the female students were performing prayers in another part of the building, so they got out safely. A probe is underway to find the exact cause of the collapse.
