India’s mission is under threat in Bangladesh. A large number of protesters tried to march towards the Indian Assistant High Commission in Rajshahi on Thursday. During the protest, slogans were raised against India. After examining the situation, the Indian mission closed the visa application centres in Rajshahi and Khulna.
Security personnel blocked roads
According to Bangladeshi media reports, security personnel blocked roads by putting up barricades. A similar incident occurred on Wednesday when protesters tried to surround the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
Dhaka streets witnessed protest
Hundreds of protesters hit the streets in Bangladesh’s capital. Around 3 pm, the march began but was blocked by the police. A minor clash took place between protesters and police after the former crossed the barricade. When they reached the second barricade, they sat on the road and started protesting. The protests took place amid concerns raised in New Delhi over the security situation in Bangladesh.
India summoned Bangladesh’s envoy
India summoned Bangladesh’s envoy Riyaz Hamidullah on Wednesday and expressed concern over the security situation around the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also said in a statement that India rejects all false narratives being spread by radical groups in Bangladesh.
India rejected the false narrative created by extremist elements
The MEA said, “India completely rejects the false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh. It is unfortunate that the interim government has neither conducted a thorough investigation nor shared meaningful evidence with India regarding the incidents.”
After assessing the situation, IVAC stated on its website that the visa application centres in Khulna and Rajshahi would remain closed on December 18. However, Dhaka’s IVAC centre reopened on Thursday after its closure on December 17.
